Sub genre? The Aretha Franklin hits "Respect" and "Think" are the definition of classic soul music!
Anyway... Your suggestion is very chill and pleasant to the ear. Every piano chord is placed exactly where they need to be to create that ambient atmosphere. This lovely instrumental piece would fit perfectly in a movie soundtrack.
Overall score: 8/10
Here's some Chicago soul for ya:
Jackie Wilson - "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher"
7/10 Pretty good, though I'm not the biggest fan of that specific track.
To add, there are sub genre's of soul such as simple divisions like Southern, Northern, Smooth, Deep etc. though you can read more here: https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/Soul/
Now for the music, here's a fantastic track from, in my opinion, the best soul artist to live. Marvin Gaye, with When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You
Not one of my favorite Marvin Gaye songs. This one drags on for me since the melodies aren't as exciting compared to some of his bigger hits like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "What's Going On", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't That Peculiar".
Overall score: 6/10
I'm probably the biggest fan of this band in the 29th ID and my nationality suggests I'm extra biased towards this song in particular. In fact, we named a music festival after this:
The Beatles - "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"
3/10 Progresses near enough fully in close to a minute and then just drags on, would have been good if it was spaced out but Jamie totally rushed progressing the track, or it must have been progressed by a previous track, which still doesn't justify it's length.
This was just a mess! No musicality...
Overall score: 1/10
Sweden's entry for Eurovision Song Contest 1995. Finished 3rd:
Jan Johansen - "Se på mig"
(English version of the song is called "Another Night", although the Swedish title directly translates to "look at me".)
When your journey is long and you are weary
But you still have to go on, mmm...
And when the shadows start to grow and come to life
And when the night scares you so
I am beside you and I follow every step you take
And with you I'll stay
So look at me, oho... a haven in the storm
Like a wave, that is born to carry you
Yes, look at me, oho... in light and darkness
I'll be there and I'll never leave you
When you stand one day at a crossroads of your life
Like a lost little child
I am beside you and I follow every step you take
And I'll stay with you
So look at me, oho... a haven in the storm
Like a wave, that is born to carry you
Yes, look at me, oho... in light and darkness
I'll be there and I'll never leave you
I'll go with you wherever you go, and I'll never leave you
So look at me, oho... a haven in the storm
Like a wave, that is born to love you
Yes, look at me, when the light turns into darkness in your life
I'll be there, and I'll never leave you
Love you so
Response to PFC Ixer: I guess it helps to be Scandinavian. I would give your song 6/10 even though it's not my style. I noticed some sweet major to minor movements in the chord progression.
Now, for 2Lt. Kear's suggestion: A bit to much room on the vocals for my taste. I also miss more low-end in the bass. On the plus side, the drums sound great and the melodies flow really well throughout. Nice effect on the lead guitar as well!
Overall score: 6/10
Taken from the soundtrack of probably the most underrated Disney movie ever - Treasure Planet. The childhood nostalgia for me is strong in this one:
John Rzeznik - "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)"
(It's the singer from The Goo Goo Dolls.)
3/10 Never really been a fan of the Floyd, never really liked that whole prog rock sound.
Now this track is actually criminally underrated, in my top 5 hip hop tracks, Kendrick never has lived up to this track afterwards nor before. It truly is his masterpiece, crème de la crème, perfect.
Kendrick Lamar - Real
The instrumentation is nice, but too bad the vocals aren't. The part I dislike the most is when they repeat the phrase "I'm real" in that annoying voice. I'm not reviewing the lyrical content, just the melodies and music.
Overall score: 3/10
Time for some instrumental funk from the guys at Vulf Records:
Comments
2/10 (Nah!)
Response to Cpl. Pepper: They copied the rhythm of Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", but nevertheless a great song with an epic guitar solo!
This song is 14 minutes long, but trust me - it's worth it! My favorite from this band:
Dire Straits - "Telegraph Road"
6/10 Always like Dire Straits but this one bit slow for me.
And a Response I had a listen to that song and you are right they did heh
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
2/10
Juice WRLD – Wasted
1/10 (Auto-tuned vocals again...)
My favorite Steve Lukather ballad with Toto. I was lucky enough to hear this live:
Toto - "I Will Remember" (Btw, the video title is lying. The album version is 6:06 min. long.)
6/10 It's alright
Radiohead - All I Need
10/10 Nothing compares.
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle (Shep Pettibone 12" Remix)
unavailable/10
REO Speedwagon - Keep on Loving You
4/10 Woulda been a 6 but honestly these cliche rock solos are doing my head in.
Classixx - All You're Waiting For
It sounds a bit overproduced to me, but overall not necessarily bad. Just not my style!
Overall score: 5/10
Toto - "Holy War" (from their 2015 album Toto XIV)
1/10 nah
Post Malone - Stay
4/10
Jamie T - Direction Home (Cheeky B-Side)
5/10 It's alright but sounds pretty bad
Wilson Pickett - Land of 1000 Dances
4/10
The Smiths - You've Got Everything Now (Hatful Of Hollow)
5/10 (Your average The Smiths song.)
You probably know by now that we recently lost one of the greatest female singers of all time - The Queen of Soul!
In her memory, I present to you:
Aretha Franklin - "Think"
R.I.P. 1942-2018
6/10 Good but I prefer my soul smooth and not southern, very hit and miss from that sub genre.
Deafheaven - Irresistible

Here's some Chicago soul for ya:
Jackie Wilson - "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher"
8/10 Real mood lifter
Ray Charles - I got a woman
7/10 Pretty good, though I'm not the biggest fan of that specific track.

1/10 truly not a fan
McFly - Obviously
1/10
battery point

6.5/10
Devotchka - Till The End Of Time
4/10 - I promise nothing: friends will part;
All things may end, for all began;
And truth and singleness of heart
Are mortal even as is man.
But this unlucky love should last
When answered passions thin to air;
Eternal fate so deep has cast
Its sure foundation of despair.
Talking Heads - The LVDY DON'T MIND (no she don't)
PTS: I CAN'T TELL ONE FROM THE OTHER
Decent, but not strong enough melodically to end on my playlist.
Overall score: 6/10
Pink Floyd - "Fat Old Sun"
(Underrated in my opinion. Listen to that melodic guitar solo and bassline!)
3/10 Never really been a fan of the Floyd, never really liked that whole prog rock sound.

Vulfpeck - "It Gets Funkier"
Dat bassline!
