One More Time - "Den vilda"
(One of the most beautiful pieces of music to ever come out of Sweden! It was their entry for Eurovision Song Contest 1996 where it got 3rd place. An English version of the song was released named "The Wilderness Mistress", but the original here in Swedish sounds much better in my opinion.)
English lyrics:
The winter is lowering its veil and is tucking in the houses
The fire in the tavern warms us and the food and the jugs
There he dances with the wild one
They are dancing like whirls in a waterfall
Filled with pride and willpower
Dancing like whirls in a waterfall
But rumours are spreading among the cottages
While snowflakes are falling
The stars are sparkling against the ice like clear crystals
There he runs away with the wild one
They are rushing like whirls in a waterfall
Filled with pride and willpower
Rushing like whirls in a waterfall
(Wild... wild... wild...)
The carriage is disappearing in the night
And the snow becomes snowdrifts along the road
The sound of hoofs are still echoing in the mountains
Playing carefreely like a waterfall
The night is lowering its veil and erasing the traces
Wherever they are, they're strong like the stream in springtime
There he dances with the wild one
They are dancing like whirls in a waterfall
Filled with pride and willpower
Dancing like whirls in a waterfall
Filled with pride and willpower
Dancing like whirls in a waterfall
Domenico Modugno - "Nel blu dipinto di blu (Volare)"
(Another 3rd place Eurovision entry, this song represented Italy in 1958 and despite not winning ended up being a massive commercial success internationally. It spent five non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in August and September 1958 and was Billboard's number-one single for the year. Modugno's recording subsequently became the first Grammy winner for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1st Annual Grammy Awards in 1958. So far the only non-English song being able to do so.)
Not much going on musically here. Plays the same thing over and over. I need something more to keep me interested.
Overall score: 4/10
Joy Fleming - "Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein" (English: "A Song Can Be a Bridge")
If you can't tell by now, I'm a huge Eurovision fan. This was Germany in 1975. Should have won, instead got 17th place in a field of 19... I hope you enjoy this as much as I and the conductor did!
No worries, I was not going to argue. I was just a bit surprised by his reaction. With that being said, decent song choice, Sgt. Butler; the drum parts are fun and the chorus is somewhat catchy. Not a song I would actively seek out again, tho.
Overall score: 6/10
Let's throw some classical into the mix!
Johann Strauss II - "Die Fledermaus: Overture" (English: "The Bat")
If it sounds familiar to you, it's because it was used in the Tom and Jerry episode "Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl". For me it carries a lot of nostalgia.
Is that Arabic? Not the kind of song I would actively listen to, but not bad by any stretch.
Overall score: 6/10
Lars Fredriksen - "Alltid sommer" (Norway in ESC 1998, 8th place/25)
I read your eyes like an open book
Living together we read each other word by word
(To be near you)
It's more than just the two of us can see
(Because we have more)
What we have is so much more
Always eternal summer, you said
And you came, and you saw, and you won my life
Always eternal summer, you said
What the others do now, means nothing
Forever warm days, you said
And reached out your hands and said: It feels quite good
Oh... (Always summer, you said)
If only I could find the words to tell what you mean to me
We live, play together, as we take the same road
(To love you)
Year by year, and day by day
(Together with you)
Our happiness grows with every heartbeat
Always eternal summer, you said
And you came, and you saw, and you won my life
Always eternal summer, you said
What the others do now, means nothing
Forever warm days, you said
And reached out your hands and said: It feels quite good
Oh... always summer, you said
My loneliness vanished, and love won
So come and let us live, you said: Always eternal summer
(Always eternal summer, you said)
And you came, and you saw, and you won my life
Always eternal summer, you said (Always eternal summer)
What the others do now, means nothing
Forever warm days, you said
And reached out your hands and said: It feels quite good
Oh... always summer, you said
(Ooh...) Always summer, you said
Wait! I've heard this song before, the whistling part to be exact, which is the best part. The animated video is entertaining and I would agree with the guy at 3:41. On the other hand the production value is not great and the vocals are dull.
Overall score: 5/10
Vulfpeck - "Dean Town"
Joe Dart on the Fender Bass!
Cheap production and almost no musical variety (drums and bass repeats the same thing through the entire song).
Overall score: 2/10
Vulfpeck (feat. Joey Dosik, David T. Walker & James Gadson) - "Running Away"
Fun-fact: David T. Walker played guitar on "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5.
Hmm... yeah! You are right, this is actually good! It's easier for me to like it because there are some rock elements in there, particularly when it comes to the instrumentation. The production value screams modern pop, but surprisingly it does not feel soulless.
This may or may not be intentional, but it's an observation I made: In the chorus, the phrase "it's not living if it's not with you", could easily be replaced with "ooh, heaven is a place on earth" (from Belinda Carlisle's 1987 hit song) and it would fit perfectly because it's essentially the same melody.
Overall score: 7/10
